Culture Kings

I’d have to say one of the worst things to witness is a person who feels disempowered and confused about what they should do in life. My desire is to help people understand the way in which God wants to use them. How God wants to use you.

So often we over complicate our purpose and get tangled up in religious expectation and misguided ideas about the “call of God”, and end up missing the simplicity of His will.

I hope this post helps to clear the air…

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.”

Isaiah 60:1-2 NIV

Firstly, it’s important to understand our context. We are living in a world that is fundamental flawed and broken, as humanity, we are flawed and broken. The light of God that was intended to shine in the hearts of men has been snuffed out, darkness covers the earth and is covering peoples hearts. This is our context, this is where we live, and this is where our purpose begins.

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.””

John 8:12 NIV

The moment we accept Christ, that beautiful light of heaven floods our soul, we get rescued out of darkness and into light. We find clarity, healing, safety and strength. In that same moment, we don’t just experience His light, we become His light, the flame in our heart gets ignited – and thus our purpose is awakened: To be light in the darkness.

The thing is, light is completely wasted in a place that’s already lit, it needs to be positioned in the darkness to have its full effect. If the only way to be used by God was inside the church, what hope is there for those living in darkness?

The truth is; God uses us whatever our sphere, no matter our role, no matter our gift. These are all just vessels and tools for his light to shine through. God needs you in your field, he needs you using your gift, he needs you amongst your people. This is how we light up the world.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

John 1:5 NIV

We need to understand the enemy of light is not darkness, darkness isn’t anything in and of itself, darkness is only the absence light. Darkness has no power over light. Darkness only exists when light is not present. We are not wrestling to overcome darkness, we are wrestling with ourselves – will we shine or wont we?

“…and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.”

Isaiah 58:10 NIV

As the scripture I started with says, we need to arise! God is calling us to go out, to invade the dark places, the cold places, the broken places, to bring hope, healing and grace. And the simplest way for us to be that light is to meet peoples needs, to spend ourselves, to pour ourselves out, to do what Christ did. To be faithful, generous, encouraging, kind, gracious… the list goes on.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen way to often, fear and intimidation get the better of people, including myself. Instead of being that light, we hide our light, trying to fit in with darkness and not wanting to stand out, but all this does is suffocate our soul, and over time we’ll find the light slowly dims and eventually dies out.

“Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.”

Matthew 5:15 NIV

I’m praying that you’d come out from hiding, you’ll awaken the call and bring light to your house – whatever that is.

Hope this has helped!

Much love,
Mitch 🙂
