Approaching Anxiety

For many of us, life is pretty good!

We live in good communities, surrounded by good people, earning good money, working towards good futures, driving good cars and living in good houses.

Yet despite all this, there are moments where life can seem to be spiralling out of control, moments where things don’t go according to plan. In these moments, our response is critical to our quality of life and therefore we need to know how to handle these moments and respond well on chaotic days.

Here’s one example of what not to do…

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

Matthew 6:25-27 NIV

Worry is something that if we’re not careful, can easily hijack our emotional well being. Even on days where everything is perfect, worry can cast a grey dye over everything we see and feel.

I’m learning that we worry because we want things to work, and we want things to work because we think that in things working is our worth.

We think that if we get a certain result, or a certain job, or a certain relationship, our self-worth will increase. Our culture hasn’t helped this mindset at all, from when we’re young there are many external pressures that speak to us saying “You’re value is in your success!” – and absolutely, we should work hard, and want to do our best, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with success… Unless, we’re basing our personal value off it.

The problem is, if our self-worth and value is based on our successes and things in life working, the day things don’t work (which is inevitable) our world comes crumbling down.

So take the pressure off! You’re already valuable.
Jesus tells us not to worry, why? Because he’s in control and because he cares.

We’ll never fully understand his provision until we understand our value.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

I’ve found that this is a daily practice, life is life, and throws curve balls out of nowhere that can cause us to be worried and fearful, we need to learn the art of little looks. Taking little moments throughout the day to look to Christ and be reminded of his love and value towards each and everyone of us.

This is the best way I know how to engage with God. Often we think God isn’t really interested in our little day to day struggles, and so when we come to pray, we don’t know how or who to be, and so we put on an act and wonder why we can’t connect with Him. The more real we are with God, the more real He can be with us.

I love this quote from Ps Steven Furtick..

“God can’t bless who you pretend to be.”

To finish, it’s important to remember that there’s always going to be people in our world so weighed down by anxiety that they need help getting back up.

Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.

It often doesn’t take much to help lift someone out from under the weight of anxiety. Here’s three quick tips to help:

  1. SEE DIFFERENTLY – notice the people who are hurting
  2. SPEAK DIFFERENTLY – use your words to bring life
  3. ACT DIFFERENTLY – do something!
